What is the ADX Indicator?

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures the strength of a trend — not its direction. It is derived from the Directional Movement System developed by J. Welles Wilder.

  • ADX < 20: Weak or no trend — market is ranging. Avoid trend-following strategies.
  • ADX 20–25: Trend is developing — watch for breakout confirmation.
  • ADX 25–50: Strong trend in play — ideal for trend-following entries.
  • ADX > 50: Very strong trend — momentum is powerful, be cautious of reversals.
  • +DI > −DI: Bullish directional pressure — buyers are in control.
  • −DI > +DI: Bearish directional pressure — sellers are in control.
  • DI Spread: Larger spread between +DI and −DI = cleaner trend signal.

ADX Formula

ADX = (Prior ADX × 13 + Current ADX) / 14

  • +DI = (Smoothed +DM / ATR) × 100, where +DM = Current High − Previous High
  • −DI = (Smoothed −DM / ATR) × 100, where −DM = Previous Low − Current Low
  • DX = (|+DI − −DI| / (+DI + −DI)) × 100
  • ATR = Average True Range over the look-back period

How to read ADX + DI together

ADX > 25 with +DI > −DI = confirmed uptrend. ADX > 25 with −DI > +DI = confirmed downtrend. When ADX rises from below 20, a new trend may be starting.
