What is Opening Range Breakout?

ORB is a popular intraday trading strategy. The "opening range" is defined by the high and low of the first 5-minute candle (9:15–9:20 AM). Stocks that break above this range tend to continue upward, and vice versa.

How to Trade ORB

Long entry: When LTP crosses above ORB High — target R1/R2 pivot, stop loss at ORB Low.

Short entry: When LTP drops below ORB Low — target S1/S2 pivot, stop loss at ORB High.

Why is the Opening Range Crucial?

The opening range plays a vital role in trading as it reflects the highest trading activity and price volatility of the session. Studies show that today's high or low is established during the opening period far more often than random chance would suggest. The ORB levels act as support and resistance for the rest of the trading day.

How to Select ORB Stocks Using This Tool

Choose the timeframe (30 mins, 45 mins, or 60 mins) based on your trading style.
30 mins ORB: Stocks that broke their opening range (9:15 AM – 9:45 AM). Breakouts occur after 9:45 AM.
30 mins ORB + PRB: Stocks that broke today's opening range AND the previous day's High or Low.
Check the stock trend alongside the overall market trend before entering.

Rules for Opening Range Breakout Trading

Wait for the initial move to complete — the breakout candle should be strong and decisive.
Volume must be noticeably higher than the previous day.
The high of the opening range should not be broken before the breakout in the intended direction.
Price should be above VWAP for long trades; below VWAP for short trades.
Volume should decline on retracement candles, confirming the breakout is genuine.
Enter above the opening range high (long) or below the opening range low (short).
